空間や重力までもコントロールするかの様なオリジナルスタイルで世界各国から注目を集めるBboy STRIPES. 正にFlipside（レコードのB面・裏面）を感じさせる土臭いスタイルはオーバーグラウンドに出ても変わらない。 今回は、そのスタイルやマインドを深掘りしたくアメリカから中国へと拠点を移した彼にインタビューを試みた。

Q:自己紹介をお願いします

A:My name is STRIPES, my birthday was 1987, August 5. I was born in Germany, raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and now I live in Beijing, China.

名前はストライプス。1987年8月5日のドイツ生まれで、育ちはフロリダのジャクソンビルで、今は中国の北京に住んでるね。

Q:どういう生活(仕事)をしてるの？

A:Right now, since I’m living in Beijing, I’m teaching breakin' at a college. I teach every day. I wake up and teach kids—well, not kids, like, high school kids, maybe 16-18 years old. Some of them are almost 20 years old.

北京に住んでからは、学校でbreakin'を教えてる。毎日だね。起きたら子供達に教える、と言っても高校生くらいかな、16〜18歳くらいから、だいたい20歳くらいだね。

Q:Bboying始めた経緯(理由)

A:There was someone in my neighbourhood. In Florida, we had someone we kind of looked up to because we were younger, and he got into breaking. His name was Darvin. He wasn’t a Bboy – we just did things that had to do with hip hop. We waited for Jordans, we waited outside of the Outkast CD… We did the things that influenced hip hop. Regular neighbourhood shit, like playing basketball, watching And1 mixtapes and their tricks. The music in there, at the time, what was popular was southern shit. Cash Money, shit like that. We started listening to different kinds of hip hop. It wasn’t just about money, cars, clothes, and hoes. At some point he was buying an AND1 tape, but he ended up buying Radiotron. Then I went back later and bought Freetsyle Session 6. And that’s when I started taking breaking seriously. My first memory was definitely that Radiotron tape. I wasn’t alone; I was practicing every day. It was all about what’s next – for some people they start and move on, but I was hooked. Then I moved into another part of town and linked up with some people and that was it.

フロリダ州で生活してる時、近所にも数人はいたんだ。俺たちは若かったからみんな親切にしてくれたね。Darvinっていう奴がいて、彼はbboyではないけど、breakin’の世界を教えてくれた。俺らはHiphopに影響を受けて様々なことをしたよ。
JordanやOutkastのCDを買いに並んだり、近所で戯れてバスケしたり、And1のミックステープでそのトリックを見たりね。そこにはいつも音楽があった。
当時はCashMoneyとかサウスの曲が流行ってたんだけど、その頃から他の種類のヒップホップを聞き始めた。それは別にお金や洋服や車のことについてではなかったかな。その後、Freetsyle Session 6を買ったんだけど、その時がおそらく真剣にbreakin’を始めたときかな。私の最初の記憶は間違いなくRadiotronのテープだね。毎日練習してて、夢中だった。それからは街の中で色々な場所に移っては、そこの人々と繋がるって感じの日々だったかな。

Q:所属crewについて

A:In 2004, I got into Main Ingredients. I went to an international festival, and where I lived, there were a lot of Filipinos, and they were the one who were breaking at that time. At that time, I was breaking alone, but that was my first time I saw people getting down, and I was like, “Damn, that’s crazy.” That’s when I met Jules, and I actually battled him. I was just a kid. That was 2002? I was 16. Yo, it was crazy bro. Anyway, we would break all day, and fast forward to around 2008, I started to get down with Flipside Kings. It wasn’t an idea of mine to get in Flipside Kings… The way they view breaking mentally was different, and I respected it.

2004年に、Main Ingredientsに入った。国際フェスティバルに行ったときにフィリピン人がたくさんいて、Breakin'を踊ってたんだけど、俺は1人で踊ってて。その時初めて見てかなりくらった奴がいたんだ、“Damn, that’s crazy” って、それがJulesに初めて会ったとき。実際に彼とバトルしたけど、俺は若かったね。2002年くらいかな？16歳だったけど、良いバトルだったよ。とにかく、それからは毎日踊ってたね。
話は2008年頃まで飛ぶけど。俺はFLIP SIDE KINGSと一緒に踊り始めた。クルーに入るのは考えていなかったけど、彼らの考え方は他とは違ってて、その考え方をリスペクトしたんだ。

Q:ネタの作り方

A:Most of the time, I don’t really make up anything new as far as myself. If I have something, I just change something that I already have, and that becomes something new. For example: however you’re living your life right now, like I’m living in China, or whomever the artist is that I’m listening to right now, I start to break in that pattern. Whatever I’m into at the time, I try to make shit based on that. I don’t look at breaking like power moves, footwork,… I see it all as one thing.

ほとんどの場合、本当に自分自身で新しいものを作らないんだ。何かを持っているならば、すでに持っているものを変え、それが新しいものになる。たとえば、あなたが今住んでいる場所、俺が中国に住んでいるように、あなたの人生を今生きているか、今聞いているアーティストなどのパターンの中で変えていくんだ。俺が当時どんなことをしていたとしても、それに基づいてやってるよ。パワームーブやフットワークを別のものとして見てなくて、それをすべて一つのものとして見てるね。

Q:KEVOとの関係

A:So at the festival, they told me, “KEVO’s coming today.” My mentality was I don’t jock anybody, so everyone’s talking about him like he’s gonna fly from the sky and land on a cloud, but I was like, I don’t care. I thought he was good, but I didn’t know him, so I didn’t try to be his friend. So he finally showed up, and he was the most quiet dude. And then I saw him start breaking, and I was like, goddamn. You know the combos people do now? He was 15 years ahead. They told me that he had flair 90, and then I saw him, and flair 90 was the end of his combo. And I was like, damn. He was also the nicest dude. He was like, “Yo, you want to come to my house and practice?” So I went there, and I met all these other people. And I met Spec, and he was KEVO’s best friend, and they were really far ahead compared to my experience in breaking. KEVO was crazy on power moves, but Spec would do an inside 90, and then catch both hands – not a power move, but some strange movements. It was weird, but he was real honest with it, and it still felt like breaking. And I felt that way about everyone in my original crew. It was honest. Some things you need to learn, but you need to have a little bit of freedom.

フェスティバルの時にみんなが今日はKEVOが来ると言ってて。みんな「彼は空を飛んで雲の上で動いてるみたい」と話していたが、俺は気にしてなかったんだ。KEVOの事は良いなーとは思ってたが、彼の事を知らなかったし、友人になろうとはしなかった。けど彼は結果的に俺の前に現れたけど、とても静かだったね。そして、彼が踊ってるところを見たんだけど、かなりヤバかったよ。彼は15年先をいってた。みんながKEVOはトーマスから1990の繋ぎを持ってるんだって言ってて、俺も初めてそれを見たとき嘘だろって感じだったよ。しかも最高の男だった。彼は "俺の家で練習したいの？"と聞いてくれたから遊びに行ったんだ、そこでKEVOの親友のSpecに会ったけど、彼らは俺の踊りのかなり先をいってたね。KEVOはパワームーブに夢中で、Specはinside 1990から両手でキャッチしてた。それはもうパワームーブって感じではなく、いかれた動きだったよ。不思議だったが、それでもBreakin'だと感じた。そして、それはオリジナルクルーのみんなに対しても同じように言えるね。正直言うと、学ぶ必要はもちろんあるけど、少しは自由に考えることも大事だと思うね。

Q:日本のBboyingシーンについてどう思う？

A:I think it’s good, man. It’s one of the most interesting scenes because there are a lot of people you don’t know who are actually pretty dope. Physical energy of the Bboys here is crazy.

とっても良いと思うよ。人口が多いからか、誰がマジでイケてるか分からないくらいだから、日本のシーンは1番興味深いと思うね。日本のbboy達は本当にエネルギーに満ち溢れててすごいよ。

Q:アングラ/オーバーグランドに関しての考え

A:There was a time when I probably knew who was this and that, but now I only know about my friends. I just follow what I do, and what the people around me do. I have no real opinion on it as a whole.

たぶんアングラとオーバーグラウンドについて知っていた時もあったけど、今は自分の友達についてしか知らないね。俺は俺のがやること、そして周りの人々がやることにしか興味がない。だからこの質問に対してはあんまり意見はないかな。

Q:今までで一番刺激を受けた物事は？

A:Probably my most important motivation was when I realized that in breaking, or in life in general, you can do whatever the fuck you want. The worst that can happen is someone says you’re wack. It’s just not that serious.

Breakin’や、望むことが何でもできることに気付いたときかな。
一番最悪な事は、誰かがあなたに対して駄目だと言うことかな。でもその言葉に対してそれほど深刻に考える必要はないよ。

Q:自分の中で大切にしている軸や考え方は？

A:Not to take shit so serious.

Q:ダンス以外に興味があることは？

A:Too many. I like to take photos, but I’m not a photographer. I like to spend time with my family. I go fishing. There’s a lot to it – about patience and preparation. I’ll just keep it simple: Outside of breaking, I just like to fish and chill.

いっぱいあるよ。写真家じゃないけど写真撮るのは好きだし、家族と過ごす時間も好きだね。釣りに行ったりね。準備や忍耐はたくさんいるけど、シンプルにいきたいね。breakin’をやってる時以外は、釣りに行ったりゆっくりゆっくりしたいかな。

Q:若い世代に言いたいことは？

A:Don’t take it so serious. Do whatever the fuck you want to do. If you do something, and it’s not good, someone might say it was wack. But who gives a fuck. Just do what you want.

深刻にならない事。マジでしたいことは何でもやろう。何かを始めて上手くいかなかったりする事もあるし、誰かがそれをバカにする様なことを言うかもね。でも気にしないでいい。あなたがしたいことをやるんだ。
